Hi, I'm Dr. Josh Stevens. If you’re reading this, it may mean you have a health problem that concerns you. You may be looking for alternatives to what you have tried in the past or a new approach to complement your traditional medical treatment. This is a brief introduction to me and my approach to treatment that I’ve developed over the past 20 years in practice and how it may contribute to your health and healing.
I have helped people of all ages, newborns to seniors, with many physical disorders, serious diagnoses, and those interested in optimal health and wellness. I spent the first 15 of these years in my home state of North Carolina (in Durham) and have recently moved to Columbia, SC with my partner, Carrie. She is a new professor in the Biology department a the University of South Carolina (Gamecocks!) We relocated to Columbia from Lawrence, Kansas where Carrie was a research fellow at KU and I continued a chiropractic and applied kinesiology practice for 5 years. I am a licensed chiropractic physician and a certified Professional Applied Kinesiologist (PAK) with over 500 hours of post-graduate training in this area. I have taught many continuing education seminars for my fellow chiropractors, notably alongside Dr. John Brimhall, one of the early adopters and developers of applied kinesiology (AK) as taught by Dr. George Goodheart. Dr. Goodheart was the founder and pioneer of applied kinesiology in 1965. I was lucky enough to have met him on many occasions and attend his seminars as a young(er) student and doctor.
As chiropractors and applied kinesiologists we identify three major sources of stress on the human body. My focus is to consider and treat all of these stressors in a holistic way. Beyond the standard physical, orthopedic, and neurological exams, my primary diagnostic tool in evaluating these stressors is muscle testing in an Applied Kinesiology framework. The first source of stress I evaluate is physical stress. Most patients I see have back, neck, shoulder, or knee pain. I also treat all other areas like the hips, hands, feet, jaw, cranial bones, and gait mechanics. Physical stress injuries can be from overuse or trauma. Ideally, our joints and muscles work together to provide full pain-free function and range of motion thoughout the body.
The second source of stress I consider is chemical stress. One way we are exposed to chemical stress is through our diet. I find that poor diet choices, food sensitivities, and inadvertant deficiencies in our diet can harm our physiology and organ systems. This can lead to many symptoms like heartburn, constipation, insomnia, inflammation, and weight gain. This can then ruin joint health, our emotional well-being, and set the stage for other disease processes.
The third type of stress is emotional stress. We all know that physical pain can cause emotional upset. When we hurt we don’t feel our best. Emotional hurt also can cause physical symptoms. Our emotional health is extremely important, perhaps the most important part of our healing process. When we feel better we do better. There are a variety of ways to identify and remedy how poor emotional vibrations slow or prevent complete healing in the body.
I use a 32-step protocol in Applied Kinesiology to assess and treat individuals. Often, pain and symptoms are the first thing to go but it doesn't mean the problem is gone forever. Our health concerns are often rooted in poor nutrition or in lifestyle oversights that keep us in a perpetual symptomatic cycle. I provide a variety of novel treatment options to get off this painful merry-go-round. These include: Chiropractic adjustments, nutritional supplementation, Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF), various types of detoxification plans, Neuro-Emotional Technique, Emotion Code Therapy, Total Body Modification (TBM), and others. These all work to reduce and eliminate the three sources of stress that affect our health. This can eliminate these barriers to permenent recovery. I not only want my patients to feel better but feel healthier and happier year after year. I look foward to helping you on your path to a pain-free and healthier life.
Sincerely,
Joshua A. Stevens, DC
