My Own Chiropractic story:
As a young runner, I was fast and free. It was one of my favorite past-times. I excelled competing in high school and was excited about the prospects of running in college and taking it to the next level. All this, until a mysterious knee injury sidelined me during my senior year of high school. I was devastated. My parents took me to some famous sports medicine doctors at Duke University but they had no solutions for me. An MRI revealed a torn meniscus but not serious enough for surgery or even physical therapy, yet I could barely walk much less run! The drug therapies they gave me for the pain were no help either. The injury persisted for months. In desperation, my mom recommended we try a chiropractor she heard about in nearby Chapel Hill, NC.
I was raised as a vegetarian until age 18. With an eye on nutrition and clean eating, as a family, we were not exactly patrons of “alternatives” to modern medicine like chiropractic. Seeing a chiropractor was a novel and formative experience for me. This chiropractor did some strange muscle tests, corrected poor joint alignment in my knee and low back, and tested nutrients to see what I needed to shore up some of the deficiencies my ‘clean’ vegetarian diet was missing. Afterwards, I was active and pain-free within weeks. I was running, playing soccer, and generally enjoying life again. My recovery with chiropractic care seemed miraculous, especially after being evaluated by the best that modern medicine had to offer at Duke. I was so grateful.
I went on to become a collegiate runner at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. There, I studied Spansih and Pre-Med for my eventual enrollment in Logan College of Chirorpactic in St. Louis, MO. I graduated from Logan in 2000 and returned to Durham, NC to start practice. . I practiced for 15 years in Durham and for 5 years in Lawrence, Kansas where my partner, Carrie, was a research fellow for the University of Kansas. She is now a new professor in the Biology Department at the University of South Carolina.
I am licensed in Kansas, North Carolina, and now South Carolina! For over 20 years, I have helped people of all ages, new-borns to seniors, with many physical disorders, serious diagnoses, and those interested in optimal health and wellness. I am a Professional Applied Kinesiologist (PAK) with over 500 hours in continuing education hours in this area. I am also working towards a diplomate in this area of practice. I utilize a 32-step Applied Kinesiology protocol. This system covers “anything that walks through my door.” Every patient is different and has a unique path to recovery. This step-wise protocol is invaluable in diagnosing which steps to do first, next and last. I am a holistic chiropractor utilizing many therapies including pulsed electro-magnetic field therapy (PEMF) to more traditional modes of treatment like chiropractic adjusting and a multitude of soft-tissue and nutritional therapies.
Being a new to Columbia, I’m seeking to continue my professional work as a chiropractor and serve this wonderful community and it’s residents. I really enjoy offering up what I know and learning more from others in field of health and healing. I also enjoy public lay lectures on topics ranging from diet and exercise, to endocrine disorders, and the power of our emotions. If you have question about anything, even if you’re not a patient of mine, please contact me.
